That's how long I've been around, 39 years and 51 weeks. One week shy of my 40th birthday. In my very near 40 years walking this earth I have learned a few truths about myself and life. Some of them have been driven into me like a nail into an unwilling board, but it doesn't make them any less true.
1. I am the creator of my own misery, I cannot and will not blame another for the way I feel.
2. Life is about the small things, the little blessings we get everyday. A picture colored by a child, a conversation with a friend, an errant "I love you," these are the things that will get you through.
3. Women are confusing and difficult (I am just gonna leave that there)
4. Cars and relationships break down, either fix them or get rid of them. Which one you choose depends on how important they are to you. Hence the fact that I drive a 13 year old truck and I am single.
5. Don't be an asshole or at least try to choose where you asshole wisely
6. It's OK to love someone who doesn't love you back
7. Be nice to your ex-wife, let me rephrase, TRY to be nice to your ex-wife
8. Help whenever you can, however you can, whoever you can
9. Don't be afraid, of anything and if you are don't let it stop you from going after what you want
10. It's always worth the risk, nothing worth having ever came easy
11. Lock the bathroom door
12. Turn it up to 11, and if you get that reference pat yourself on the back
13. It's never to late to start over or try again, and when it is, it still isn't
14. Don't look back, unless you are in front of me in the passing lane. The left lane is for passing ONLY!
15. Be nice to the waiter even if he fucks up your order
16. Open doors for little old ladies
17. Say "yes sir" and "no ma'am," my children and my players are pretty sick of that one
18. Don't panic
19. Tell the people you love that you love them, some of my friends question my sexuality on the regular as that is what I say to them every time I get off the phone.
20. Don't worry so much
40 will come and go just like its 39 predecessors and I am looking forward to the future. New job, back to school, football, cheer leading, kids, ex-girlfriends, ex-wives (its her birthday today so if you know her give her a call), friends, the next girlfriend, and all the other nonsense that goes with being a functioning and contributing member of today's society. Maybe 40 will be my comeback year........................
